Conasauga is a river and creek connecting North Georgia and Tennessee. The word comes from the Cherokee word "Ka-Na-Sa-Gah" which means "sparkling water." Other translations are "grass" and "strong horse.".

Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, the area was home to many descendents of Amatoya Moytoy, an early Chota Cherokee town chief who was famous for his ability to "witch for water" with a willow stick. He held the hereditary title Ama Matai (from the French matai and Cherokee ama--water), which means "Water Conjurer" or "Water Witch."
